watches

Every time I pass by a wristwatch display, I would go like, "oh, this one looks nice, that one looks funny.." etc. They're kinda like cars, all do pretty much the same thing (even more so with a watch), but are just fun to look at when they're on display.

Seeing how I don't own a watch, and constantly lose track of time, and am usually late...

When I was looking at watches a few days ago, Mom asked me which one I liked. So I was like, "oh, that one." So then she bought it for me, as an early birthday present, cause she wouldn't be around when it is actually my birthday. It's a Seiko! (lookie at picture above)

Well, it came with many extra links on there. It was big enough to fit a few few fat person, or in my case, my ankle. No one wears watches on their ankles. So I had to have a few links removed.

I'm still trying to get used to wearing a watch. Since I'm left handed, I'm used to wearing things on my right hand, which is fine and all when it's a piece of string or something that won't break when I knock it into something, cause I normally use my right hand for everything (except for chopsticks and writing and opening doors sometimes) because I just happen to live in a right handed society.

The watch feels funny sitting on my left hand.

Sometimes I put on my watch upside down and read the time completely wrong. Imagine my facial expression when I was at work waiting to get off at 7 and I read my watch as 12:50. (It was really 6:20)

Even when its right side up, it takes me a while to figure out the time.

I need to check both my wrists to figure out which one has the watch on it.

I still like it nevertheless.

new earphones!

Sometime last week, I broke my ipod earphones during track. Everyone knows they're pretty cheap, and break easily. I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did. Anyways, I was jumping or skipping, or something, and my ipod fell out of my pocket, and then it looked like I was playing tether ball with my ipod. Left earphone breaks. So I was stuck with only the right earphone for a while.

Well, today, my new earphones came in the mail. Sennheiser CX-300s. They're rather nice, sound quality hasn't degraded one bit from the switch. Actually, I think things sound a little bit better now. Maybe I'll go and test with my sisters ipod earphones to see if I can hear a difference.

They're also slightly sound isolating, not completely, but enough that my sister was standing right next to me, talking to me and I couldn't hear a thing she said. Everything is louder too. Before my volume max would be about 70% of the absolute max (which still doesn't drown out connie's singing, but it's loud enough to allow me to hear my own music). Now it's about 30% of the absolute max, and that sounds louder than it did before.

Only thing I don't like about it is that the cable is asymmetrical. Which is nice I guess. I'm just not used to looping my wire behind my neck.

edit: yup. pretty noticeable difference between ipod earphones and new ones. Other than being much louder and clearer for high quality music, low quality music is noticeable too. Like if the song wasn't well mastered (ie. most American rock music) you can actually hear the static in the background most noticeably with guitars, especially electric guitars.

track spikes

OK. These are my track spikes... or rather, what they should have looked like two years ago when I bought them. Yup, they're that color too. (horray for google imagesearch)

Now they're kinda reddish pink (from sitting on the track so much, the red from the track rubs off a bit), really muddy (jumps is a field event, theres naturally mud on the field. Plus, long and triple jump requires jumping into a, usually muddy, box of sand), with grass stains. Not to mention that there's a few drops of blood stains from all the times my spikes attacked me (ie. my right hand and my left leg).

Anyhoo, they're old enough to be considered old now, and old things tend to break. But before that, a quick lesson in high jump.

As the image says, this is a diagram (from google) of how a high jump run looks like. It's a weird J shape. The curve is there to help turn in the air, and to make sure momentum is going to carry the jumper over the bar, and onto the super squishy mat. Nothing specific there, since it doesn't really relate to the story. Well, when you run the curve, you tilt inwards (or, you're supposed to anyways), so when you plant, you can spring into an upright position from the tilt, and it gives a small boost in jumping height. Also when you plant, you're supposed to rotate a little bit, so your body ends up perpendicular to the bar, which then allows for the arch, etc. Hopefully that made sense. If it does, great. Now if only nooby high jumpers could understand also.

So.

Because I run at a tilt during the curve part, only half of the shoe would be on the ground. Imagine your shoe, then kinda tilt it sideways on a flat surface. Well, on the half thats not touching the ground, the rubbery part of the heel wanted to be flat on the ground, rather than tilted on the ground, so the stress would be put on where the heel connected to the rest of the shoe.

Well, after 2+ years of jumping high jump, that stress to that area started a small gash that separates the heel from the rest of the shoe, and it continues to get bigger and deeper after each jump.

The last step of the jump requires a "rotation" of the body. Well, you're supposed to rotate at the torso. Your foot isn't supposed to rotate at all until you leave the ground. Well, since my spikes aren't designed for high jump (which have extra spikes on the heel), they're middle distance spikes, which are more like general purpose spikes. If the floors slippery, the back of the shoe might slide a bit (look at the picture of my spikes on top, notice how they only have spikes at the front of the shoe, not at the heel). You;re not supposed to slide when you plant, hence the need for extra spikes at the heel of the foot to better prevent skidding.

These past few days, the school has been watering the field a lot lately (along with burying it with cow poopoo) so it looks pretty during graduation and next football season. That makes the high jump floor area wet, and since we start off our runs in the grassy area, the bottom of our shoes wet too. Water makes people slip. Guess what happened? Yesterday, I was doing my run, then right when I planted and was about to take off, I slipped. Gash between my heel and shoe gets a lot bigger, and my ankle gets a bit messed up (obviously this isn't the first time, so yeah, I have pretty messed up ankles). So I stopped, took off my spikes, put on my running shoes, and called it a day.

Today we practice high jump again. I don't exactly want my shoe splitting in half, nor do I want to buy another pair just to use only for the remainder of this season. So I grab some medical trainer's tape, and use it to hold the heel in place. Seemed to work OK. Horray for medical trainer's tape. Hopefully they hold out all right, cause I really really like these pair of spikes.

The above makes sense... right?

Did I mention that I really really like medical trainer's tape? Other than their obvious use of taping injuries, they're quite useful. We tape the floor/grass to mark things, yes, it tapes onto grass, quite well too, cause it stays on the grass until they decide to run over it with the lawnmower, and even then, it might still be there. They're really sticky. People complain when I tape up their shins and part of the tape adheres to their skin rather than the pre-wrap, cause then when they take it off, they loose lots of hair. Think waxing. The tape's streachy, and almost cloth like in texture, and behaves almost exactly like cloth. We steal boxes of these from the trainer, and they get mad at us cause their tape disappears.

I bought a set of sharpies from staples! 12 colors! weeeeeee. In preparation of yearbook signings I guess. Whats the point of yellow sharpies...?

what i learned at work today

Since today was a pretty slow day at work, I had time to learn a few things.

Shopping carts are super easy to pull with running shoes. I can actually grip the floor, which means I can maneuver them much much better, and pull more of them at once. Cept, this one lady ran in front of my very long train, and I had to stop suddenly, so the carts made a nice little bruise on one finger, and a small cut on the other.

The cashier conveyor belt, the belt where you, the customer, dump your stuff on to bring to the cashier is automatic. It moves by itself until an item comes up to the scanner, then stops. Not fair. The bagging conveyor belt, the one that brings the stuff from the cashier to the me, needs to be turned on and off manually.

Extra plastic bags are kept in the "alcohol room" (wtf?)

The spray bottle with the green liquid is used to clean stuff. There's a blue liquid too. They told me its used the same way. I'm pretty sure ones used for glass and the other for everything else. But hey! if they don't care, I don't either.

They keep feather dusters under the cashiers. So I asked what do I dust with these dusters. They told me, "anything." So, I dusted the phone and the top of the screen, then I sneezed, so then they said, "see, that's why you never see them."

When they say "Fresh at 5pm or it's free," they really mean its fresh or its free. They smell nice when its fresh.

The sink in the deli is operated using the knee. Yeah, the knee. I probably stared at that sink for a good while before I figured that out. Still not too sure which one's for hot water and which one's for cold water.

People really really like to buy items with red tags. Sure that means its on sale, but it doesn't make it inexpensive. I swear just about everyone bought either asparagus or strawberries today.

Downloaded some stuff yesterday..

DBSK - T (studio album)
DBSK - Two hearts / WILD SOUL (single)
DBSK - Runaway / My Girlfriend (single)
DBSK - If..!? / Rainy Night (single)
DBSK - Close to you / Crazy Life (single)
DBSK - Keyword / Maze (single)
Ayumi Hamasaki - Mirrorcle World (single)
Ayumi Hamasaki - A-yu-mi-x 6 -GOLD- (remix album)
Ayumi Hamasaki - A-yu-mi-x 6 -SILVER- (remix album)

A-yu-mi-x 6 -SILVER- seems to be remixes of slow songs, whereas -GOLD- is a remix of her more upbeat songs. They're still techno/trance remixes. -SILVER- sounds better, remixes of upbeat songs just gets a bit.. weird. Especially like "GAME x YOJI" and "part of me x CARL CRAIG" from -SILVER-.

I really really really like Mirrorcle world. Its like (well, it IS) the complete version of "Mirror" from her Guilty album. I liked "Mirror" so I like "Mirrorcle World" even more.

DBSK still sounds very.... DBSK-esque. Hate the DBSK version of "LAST ANGEL". It sounds better with Koda Kumi. I like "DARKNESS EYES" from T , it's like a fast ballad.. sad, but still kinda upbeat. Of all the DBSK solos, I like "Maze" (Jaejoong's solo) the most. It resembles gackt's style a lot, just with a higher voice. So yes, its punk rock- ish.

In other news, I got my official, paper, rejection letter from UCLA. It's actually exactly identical to what it said on the site. What a waste of trees.

Rubio's closes at 9! didn't know that. No tacos for me today.

I swear people give me weird looks when I wear bright red. One of these days I need to go out and buy some bright red bball shorts to match my bright red track jacket and my bright red shirt.

easter at vons

Todays the first time I had an earlier shift! :D Horrible timing too. There was a nice big mob of people come in right when my shift started (apparently church just got out). But after they left, it was pretty chill. Apparently, one customer per 10 minutes is pretty normal, so, all the days I've worked so far would've been considered "very busy" days.

After lunch though, store got a lot busier, and I was on carts duty again. Wasn't too bad today, cept the 80 degrees sun, but the breeze made up for it. Managed to avoid customers with big big orders by staying outside running around gathering carts. Few more things I learned about them today (part two of spawns of the devil. dun dun dun!): Customers like to use them as trash cans. If they showed personal information on receipts, I would be the best identity thief ever. Also, if they're not perfectly aligned when you try to stick them together, they just clank, and usually, one of them gets pushed away. Plus side to all this is that my boss gave me the OK to wear running shoes to work cause I have to pull carts. NO MORE DRESS SHOES. weeeeeeee.

Oh, and I managed to sneak out right when the store got really really busy. Why wouldn't I? My shift technically ended 15 minutes ago, and once shift ends, I want out. Kinda sucks for everyone else though, since when I left, I was the only bagger up front. Yup. Bag your own groceries! oh well.

shopping carts are spawns of the devil

Seriously.

For starters, they have relationship problems. Put two of them together, and they both disappear together behind some planter. Put three of them together and they suddenly all hate each other, go emo, and attempt to jump into traffic, in three different areas. Now imagine six of them. Of course, we do get a nice little cable to hold them all together; it's really only long enough to hold like six of them together, with a bit of effort.

Which brings me to my next point. You'd think six shopping carts tied together would be fairly simple to get back to the store. Well, they travel in a straight line, a very very stubborn straight line. So, in order to make them turn, you have to stop, and drag them from the side (which leave nice little tread marks on the floor btw) and hope that while you drag them sideways, the cable holding them together doesn't go undone.

Of course, when you get to the store, you have customers who want shopping carts. So they see me bringing some fresh shopping carts in and ask if they may have one. Since it is extremely rude to say, "No ma'am, please take two more steps to your left and take one out of the super long line of shopping carts there," I'd hand one to them, and in order to do that, I have to undo the cable and get one off. If one goes free, they all go free. Now this wouldn't that big of the problem if they took shopping carts at the end of my line closer to the parking lot, cause then all the remaining shopping carts would just rush forward into the cart cradle, but no, they want the cart closer to the store. So all the remaining carts rush back into the parking lot, cause if one goes free, they all think they are freed too. The downward slope into the parking lot doesn't help much either.

Then there's the fact that there are many many many shopping carts, in fact, there are so many shopping carts that they don't even fit into the cart cradle in front of the store. So we make another line right next to it, two in fact. I like those more, cart cradles are evil. There's a reason for so many shopping carts, right? Of course there is. They make nice planter decor. Seriously, who doesn't like looking at trees surrounded by shoppings carts, all the way across the plaza right next to the bank. The parking lots half empty most of the time, is it really that hard to find a closer parking spot to the store, instead of right next to the bank, past several speed bumps, gutters, and ditches. Dragging a line of shopping carts over them isn't fun. Sometimes I get my line halfway across one, and the other half decides to go like, screw you, the bank's cooler, and breaks off from the line. Then I would have to chase after them again and while I'm chasing after the few carts that are trying to rob the bank, the remaining few carts decide to be like, oooo, water is in the gutter, lets follow it! and end up in some big ditch in the middle of the road.

Did I mention that I'm gathering carts in long sleeves and a tie, dress shoes a little bit too big, in the wonderful afternoon sun?

Oh well, it's the only part of my job I don't like so much. Its fun at night when the parking lots empty and you can kick em around, but not during peak hours, with minivans and little kids everywhere.
